Grief and Difficult Diagnoses

Grief happens in two parts.
The first is loss.
The second is remaking of life
— Annie Roiphe

When we experience loss or when you or a loved one receives a serious, life-changing diagnosis, we are left trying to “remake” life within a new reality.

All of a sudden, we are in unfamiliar territory with the realization that change is coming whether we choose it or not.

Anticipatory grief, grief over impending loss or significant change, can cause feelings of numbness, disbelief, guilt, and sadness. When we work through these emotions as they arise, however difficult it may be, we find healing and hope. We learn to make room for both the sadness and the joy.

We all have individual experiences of loss. However, experiencing loss and grief is the common thread among us all. In healing, we find connection to others and ourselves.
